Within implementation of the project to complete the construction of interim dry storage facility for spent nuclear fuel, a lifting device for fuel tubes (FT) has been delivered to ISF-2 construction area. This device will be used as a part of main equipment in the process chart of spent fuel preparation for storage, and it is intended for handling of empty fuel tubes and those filled with spent fuel assemblies.

June 6 last Spent Fuel Assembly (SFA) was unloaded from the cooling pool of the Central Hall 1 and transferred to the wet type Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility (ISF-1).

It should be noted that before completion of the extended operational time, on April 14, 2016 the State Nuclear Regulation Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU) has issued the separate permit to SSE "Chernobyl NPP" to unload the damaged Spent Nuclear Fuel from Units 1,2 and to transport it to the "wet" type Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility (ISF-1) for safe disposal and storage.

On the 10th of May 2016 works started on discharge of damaged spent nuclear fuel from Unit 1, and its transportation to the ISF-1 cooling pool.

The activities are being performed according to the individual permit series OD No. 000040/9 For Works and Operations on Discharge of Damaged Spent Nuclear Fuel from Power Units 1 and 2, and Its Transportation to the Wet Type Interim Spent Fuel Storage Facility (ISF-1) to be Safely Placed and Stored, issued by the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine to SSE ChNPP on the 14th of April 2016.

On the 26th of April 2016, Nuclear Safety Account Pledging Conference was held at Chornobyl NPP. In the presence of Petro Poroshenko, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Ostap Semerak, Director of the State Specialized Enterprise Chornobyl NPP Igor Gramotkin and President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Suma Chakrabarti signed the Third Amendment to the Grant Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and State Specialized Enterprise Chornobyl NPP as Recipient and EBRD.

2016 was declared the year of remembrance of the liquidators and victims of the Chernobyl disaster by the Decree of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. Consequently, following up upon own initiative, on 26th April, on the day of 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl NPP accident, Petro Poroshenko personally visited the ChNPP industrial site.

The President and his attendants paid tribute to the memory of all those, who gave their lives and health rescuing the world against the severest technogenic radiation accident in human history, and laid flowers to the Memorial Sign of the Chernobyl heroes.
