On December 20, 2024, the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine amended the license issued to the Chornobyl NPP, granting the right to conduct activities related to the processing and storage of radioactive waste.
The amendments specifically authorize the commissioning of the Solid Waste Retrieval Facility and the Solid Waste Processing Plant, components of the Industrial Complex for Solid Radioactive Waste Management (ICSRM).
This milestone enables Chornobyl NPP to begin industrial operation of the ICSRM.
The facility will process:
• Solid radioactive waste accumulated during the plant’s operation,
• Waste generated during Chornobyl NPP’s decommissioning,
• Operational radioactive waste from the Shelter object.
The commencement of ICSRM’s industrial operation marks a significant step in the safe and efficient management of radioactive waste at the Chornobyl NPP site.
