On 29 August 2024, Grant Agreement No. 3 was signed between the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Chornobyl NPP. This agreement provides for the financing of key works aimed at the safety improving and ChNPP facilities modernisation. The agreement is funded by donors from the International Chernobyl Cooperation Account (ICCA), which is administered by the EBRD.
One of the main areas of works, which will be financed under this agreement, is ISF-1 modernisation. Currently, spent nuclear fuel (SNF) from the first three power units of the Chornobyl NPP is temporarily stored in this storage facility. The main tasks of the modernisation are critically important for ensuring the safety of the facility, taking into account the need for long-term storage of spent nuclear fuel and the difficulties caused by military operations on the territory of Ukraine.
The agreement also provides funding for the construction of a vacuum evaporation unit for the radioactively contaminated water (RCW) management, which will reduce the volume of radioactive waste and ensure water purification for the technological needs of the ChNPP.
Earlier, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine ratified the Framework Agreement on the activity of International Chernobyl Cooperation Account and Grant Agreement No. 2 was signed, which will finance activities to improve the safety of the Shelter object and ensure reliable and safe operation of the NSC-SO complex.
