On February 21, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the administrator of grant funds from International Chornobyl Cooperation Account, and the State Specialized Enterprise “Chornobyl NPP” signed Grant Agreement No.2 at SAUEZM office.
Under this agreement the support will be provided for restoration of ChNPP infrastructure. As the EBRD Nuclear Safety Department Director Balthasar Lindauer said it is the start of a new stage and the Grant Agreement signing is a symbol of ChNPP safety and security programme commencement.
The main tasks include:
- - Completion of New Safe Confinement pre-design activities, dismantling of unstable structures in terms of “early” dismantling;
- - survey of the Deaerator Stack and Turbine Hall structures protruding beyond New Safe Confinement Enclosing Perimeter;
- - procurement of the necessary for the NPP transport infrastructure restoration vehicles, and equipment and consumables for reliable and safe operation of New Safe Confinement-Shelter Facility.
- In his welcome speech the SAUEZM First Deputy Head Andrii Tymchuk said: “This programme is intended to solve the most urgent and critical problems of the power plant. ChNPP personnel have gained successful experience in delivery of complicated projects, and we can be sure that this agreement will be implemented by Recipient at high proficiency level”.
We remind you that within the latest 20 years owing to the cooperation with the EBRD a number of large projects have been delivered. Namely construction of the treatment plant for liquid radioactive waste built up during ChNPP operation and resulting from CHNPP decommissioning and Shelter facility operation. Equally well known is the dry-type Interim Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility (ISF-2) project designed for acceptance, processing and storage of spent fuel assemblies collected at Chornobyl NPP for the operation period.
However, the most prominent project is New Safe Confinement constructed over Shelter facility covering the destroyed by beyond-basis accident ChNPP power unit 4. NSC construction has become an important step in Shelter facility transformation into an environmentally safe system.
