On Thursday 25 January, Olha Vasylevska-Smahliuk, a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, visited the industrial site of the Chornobyl NPP with a familiarization purpose.
Mrs Vasylevska-Smahliuk represents the voters of the 96th constituency, located in the Kyiv region to the northwest of the capital. The constituency includes Slavutych and Ivankiv territorial communities, which are closely connected with the Chornobyl NPP and the Exclusion zone.
The purpose of the deputy’s visit was to get acquainted with the activities of enterprises belonging to the State Agency of Ukraine for Exclusion Zone Management, as well as to obtain information about the period of occupation of the Exclusion Zone by russian troops. The visit will serve the basis for preparation of the analytical material to promote the Exclusion Zone development and disseminate reliable information about the consequences of the occupation in the European Union countries.
Among other facilities in the Exclusion Zone, Mrs Vasylevska-Smahliuk visited the observation site of the New Safe Confinement and the memorial to the victims of the Chornobyl disaster.
At the ChNPP site, the deputy was accompanied by the plant's Chief Engineer Oleksandr Titarchuk. According to him, such visits are important because after the occupation, the work at the Chornobyl NPP has undergone great changes both in production and social terms. The demonstration of the working conditions of the personnel and the scope of work that has been done to return the plant to operation, helps the guests of the site to better understand the challenges faced by ChNPP and also contributes to the establishment of further cooperation for the development of the plant.
