On 6 March 2023, representatives of the Clean Futures Fund (US) visited the Chornobyl NPP site. The main goal of their visit was to deliver and hand over the dose monitoring equipment that had been purchased by the Fund.
In particular, the plant received the following equipment:
• 1 SmartCam continuous air monitor
• 4 personal dosimeters
• 1 hand-held radiometer
• Other equipment (headlamps, radio stations etc.).
“The main part of our delivery was this SmartCam system which is the continuous air monitor. It allows the monitoring of radioactive isotopes in the air, and therefore for the ability to keep workers and personnel on site safe”, — comments Scientific Adviser to the Fund Mr Jake Hecla about the equipment.
Head of ChNPP’s radioecological laboratory Valentyn Kysliuk said that the provided equipment would increase the instrument inventory of the Radiation Safety Shop, however the foreign equipment first needs to be supplemented and tested, and only after this it can be operated.
After the invasion period the plant has endured, it is very important to replenish its equipment inventory, in particular the dosimetry tools and devices. We have made a wide range of requests to the charity funds and organizations, and we greatly appreciate any assistance we receive!” – said Mr Kysliuk in conclusion.
FYI. Since 2016, the Fund has initiated and conducted a number of projects both in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone and in the communities affected by the Chornobyl disaster (Slavutych and Ivankiv are among them). The main highlights of their work include:
1. “Dogs of Chornobyl” project — regulation of the population of stray dogs on the territory of Chornobyl NPP and Exclusion zone by sterilization and vaccination;
2. Providing assistance to children of ChNPP’s employees who have health problems: financing of surgeries, rehabilitation, and medical equipment;
3. Providing assistance to retired liquidators of the Chornobyl accident;
4. Conducting joint annual radiation safety training programmes for US specialists in cooperation with the ChNPP Radiation Safety Shop.
“This visit was primarily to help deliver equipment that can help in the revitalization and recovery after the occupation. We are proud to provide this equipment and we intend to provide much more. Thank you very much for all your efforts that you put in to making Chornobyl safe, and therefore to making Europe and the world safe. You people are really heroes. Thank you”, — said Jake.
