On May 21, 2021, the SSE Chornobyl NPP Acting Director General Valeriy Seyda was handed over ЕО 000859/1/15 Individual Permit of the SNRIU by a Head of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine – Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety Hryhorii Plachkov; the permit is for retrieval of standard spent nuclear fuel from the Interim Spent Fuel Wet Storage Facility (ISF-1).
This permit obtaining enables the Chornobyl NPP to start the next important stage of ChNPP decommissioning – i.e. activities and operations for removal of spent nuclear fuel from ISF-1 and the spent fuel transportation to ISF-2 for the long-term storage.
We remind you that on April 23, 2021, ChNPP obtained a licence giving a right to carry out the activity at a life cycle stage "Operation of a Nuclear Facility – Interim Spent Fuel Dry Storage Facility (ISF-2)".
"Currently, actually all nuclear fuel spent in ChNPP Units 1, 2, 3 reactors is kept in spent fuel pools of the licensed ISF-1. The granted permit allows ChNPP commencing the transportation and placement of the standard nuclear fuel for long-term storage. For removal of "damaged" nuclear fuel from ISF-1 that demands additional safety measures taking, ChNPP must obtain a new permit in future," – Deputy Director General (for Licensing and Departmental Supervision) Kostiantyn Shefer explains.
