Containers for separate collection of used batteries were placed by the Chornobyl NPP in its office buildings both at the Chornobyl site and in Slavutych city. When these special containers are full, all the collected batteries will be sent for disposal, and the containers reused.
FYI: One unprocessed used battery which is decomposed in an environment is able to contaminate up to 16 cubic meters of soil with toxic substances. Those substances which are released from batteries and which contaminate soil, rivers and groundwater, include mercury, lead, cadmium, lithium, acids and alkaline compounds. Only 1% of 2,500 tones of batteries imported to Ukraine annually, go to processing.
