In the past 24 hours, numerous fires have continued within the Exclusion Zone, resulting in the fire approaching the Chornobyl NPP’s facilities. In fact, the points of fire outbreak were situated near villages Novyi Myr, Stara Rudnia, Klyvyny and Chystogalivka where burning of grass, reeds and forest litter was observed.
In the area of Chystogalivka village, due to a rush of wind, the fire spread through a fire barrier line and an automobile road and, by passing the area that used to be called "Red Forest", reached the Yaniv railway station, located 2.2 kilometres from the Chornobyl NPP.
There was also a burning of grass litter at the Cooling Pond’s dam, in particular, between the dam and the river on the right bank of the Prypiat River. Besides, focal points of open fire were recorded in close proximity to the Chornobyl NPP’s outdoor switchgear and the site for temporary storage of technological materials.
The above-mentioned fire areas near the ChNPP industrial site were localized and extinguished by staff of State Fire Rescue Department No. 2 (2-DPRCh). As a result of the fire, the ChNPP facilities were not damaged. Two household module buildings were burned within the site for temporary storage of technological materials. There was no fire effect on the outdoor switchgear’s equipment.
As emphasized by the ChNPP Senior Shift Supervisor, Ihor Oleksandrov, there have been no concerns regarding the state of the SSE ChNPP nuclear and radiation safety. The radiation situation at the Chornobyl NPP is normal; the values are below the control levels. The state of equipment of the ChNPP facilities complies with the regulations.
As of April 14, 2 p.m., there is no fire hazard to the ChNPP facilities.
